Nash Central’s boys and girl cross country team excelled at a Big East meet at James B. Hunt High School on Wednesday. The boys finished 3rd while the girls finished 5th. Kazelee Johnson and Carisha Leonard were the top runners, and they both set new season record times.  The cross country team will have its next meet on Wednesday, September 23rd at home.

The volleyball team also played well against Hunt on Thursday, but the Bulldogs weren’t able to defeat the Warriors. JV lost the first match 11/25 and the third match 16/25 while winning the second match 25/20. Varsity also played close games, losing 11/25, 19/25 and 18/25. Nash Central will play its next game on Monday, September 21st at home against Smithfield-Selma.

The effort exerted by the girls tennis was also immense, but Nash Central would fall in a close 5-4 hard-fought match against Hunt on Thursday. Kayley Sharpe was victorious against Lacey Timmerman 7-5, 8-10, and 10-8. Michaela Matthews also came out on top, beating Madison Hux 6-1. 2-6, and 10-4. Ashleigh Lamm and Haley Baker were also successful against Anna Dollars and Caroline Parker, respectively. Lamm won 7-5, 6-2 while Baker won 6-2, 6-4. Senior Hannah Whitehead also played well but lost 2-6, 2-6 to Bryson Lee. Madison Wall would also fall to Anna Barnes 0-6 and 9-11. Nash Central wouldn’t have much success in doubles play with the teams of Sharpe/Whitehead, Matthews/Lamm, and Baker Silver falling to the duos of Loggins/Parker, Barnes/Lee, and Hux/Dollar, respectively. The scores of the sets were 5-8, 6-8, and 1-8. The Bulldogs are now 7-3 on the season with 1-3 mark in Big East play. The Bulldogs will next play Southern Nash at home on Tuesday, September 22nd.

The boys soccer team was also in action on Thursday. Despite losing, Nash Central head coach Ryan Ruiz, remarked that it was “one of the best games played so far…”. Bedingfield would take a 2-0 lead early, but a quick defensive adjustment by the Bulldogs helped contain the Bedingfield offense for the rest of the game. Jacob Wolf should show off his skills later on in the game. The senior sent a kick beyond the defense and Nash Central’s Drifton Padgett was able to outplay the goalie and capitalize on the play. Nash Central would now trail 2-1. The Bulldogs offense would come close to scoring on several more occasions but a detrimental mistake by the Nash Central defense allowed Bedingfield to win a one-on-one goalie battle, raising the score to 3-1.  In spite of the loss, Nash Central fully displayed its talents and high skill set. The Bulldogs’ new formation showed the potential to have tremendous success, and the cooler temperatures will definitely help the Bulldogs as Nash Central goes deeper into the season. The Bulldogs will play its next game on Monday, September 21st against Rocky Mount at home.
