One of Nash Central’s finest teachers was honored on Monday, November 30th. School was just back in session after the Thanksgiving holiday when Nash Central social studies teacher and head varsity basketball coach Renny Taylor was surprised and honored by the Ken Wilson, who is the chairman of Halifax Resolves chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, with History Teacher of the Year honors. Due to this accomplish, Taylor received a certificate, a check for $150, and the opportunity to compete at the state level competition.

When asked about his feelings regarding this accomplishment, Taylor said, “It’s an honor.  I was speechless, which was unusual for me, and anytime you accomplish something of this magnitude, it’s really something to be proud of”. Taylor was definitely thrown off guard by this award, saying that, “When Mrs. Powers came hollering and screaming, I really didn’t know what was going on. I have no idea what happening. It was a complete surprise”. Essentially, Taylor was definitely appreciative and well-deserving of this honor, and his work with his students will certainly pay dividends for them in the future.

While, Taylor is one Nash Central’s most highly-regarded teachers, he is also the head varsity basketball coach for the Bulldogs, and Taylor certainly has positive vibes regarding the 2015-2016 season. While the Bulldogs did lose their opener on the road in a close 64-58 battle against Corinth Holders on Tuesday, November 24th, Taylor still “feels good about the season”. Tayor says that, “It’s one of those things where we’ll get better as the season goes on. We’re pressing more this season, and I feel that we’ll get better as time goes on. We lost our opener but we did a good job pressing, and the guys just have to get more comfortable with it, and know what they’re comfortable with doing”. Particularly, Taylor said that “Keshaun Peoples and Elijah Cole have shown signs of comfort with pressing”. Taylor also believes that Peoples and Cole have a great ability to anticipate the press. In regards to his goals for the season, Taylor was very optimistic, saying that, “Of course, every coach goes into the season wanting to win the conference, and that’s at the forefront”. Taylor also said that, “You have to be realistic, but if we play play hard, it’s put us in a good place, and I feel that if we get effort out of our guys we’ll get better as the season goes on. All in all, it’s definitely clear that Taylor feels that there is much potential to be exerted out of his team and that if this potential is unleashed, much success can be achieved.

In summary, Renny Taylor plays many roles at Nash Central, and whether it’s in the classroom or on the basketball court, he definitely cares and wants what’s best for his students and players, and this is clearly something to commend and respect.
